Overwhelmed By Your First Martial Arts Lesson?

It is quite normal to be nervous of attending your first martial arts lesson. However you may not be expecting to feel overwhelmed once that lesson is over.

This doesn’t happen to everyone. However the nature of martial arts and the experience of trying it out for the first time can be a little intense when you don’t know what to expect. You’ll learn a lot, much of which may be forgotten by the time you return for your second class. Don’t worry. This can and does happen.

Remember this: However you are feeling when you finish your first class, a lot of other attendees will be feeling the same. The same thing applies when you arrive for the next class. You’re new and you are still learning. You may feel overwhelmed for some time before you start getting some confidence in what you are doing.

No one likes feeling overwhelmed, but in reality it is better to know you probably will feel this way than not to know at all. Of course you might feel like this before you go to your first lesson rather than afterwards, when you’ve had that initial block of information to take in. If this is the case it would be very easy not to go at all. But you booked that lesson for a reason. Promise yourself you’ll go and see what it is really like. Everyone else in attendance will feel the same. Before you know it you will feel more confident and more encouraged by the results you are getting.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember, then, is that feeling overwhelmed is temporary. You’ll reach a stage where you look back and smile at how you felt – and appreciate where you are now.
