Many people decide to start learning karate purely as a method of self-defence. Everyone hopes they will never need to use the moves they learn, and can just enjoy karate as a method of getting fitter and healthier. However, it is good to know you can benefit from faster reflexes as well.
It doesn’t even have to translate into a potentially-dangerous situation, either. For example, you might be driving along a road and a dog could run out in front of you. Even though you may not be hurt if there was an accident, fast reflexes could save you from hitting the dog, as you could brake sooner than you may otherwise have done.

If you did ever find yourself in any danger, the speed of your reflexes could well decide what happens next. No attacker will ever expect the person they pick on to have fast reflexes that will take them by surprise.
